Banyana World Cup dream drawing closer

Banyana Banyana swept through Mali in a windy and dusty Sinaba Stadium to qualify for the semifinal of the Caf African Women’s Championships.

Needing only a draw to book a place in the last four, the South African senior women’s team did just enough to see through Mali, who needed an outright victory to go through.

Buoyed by the capacity crowd Banyana responded positively playing good entertaining football. Two goals by Amanda Dlamini – one in each half – a third by substitute Jermaine Seoposengwe took Banyana a step closer to realising their dream of qualifying for their first-ever World Cup in Germany next year.

Defender Amanda Sister put the final nail on the coffin with a header in injury time.

With only two teams guaranteed a spot at next year’s event, Banyana need a victory in the semifinals on Thursday to book tickets to Germany.

After a below par performance in the first half in which they scored only one goal, Banyana turned on the heat in the second stanza scoring three more goals to register their heaviest win of the tournament.

They will need to produce the same kind of performance in the semifinal against probably Cameroon, who lead Group B.

The game was marred by unsporting behaviour from the Mali players who remonstrated with the officials and resorted to playing dirty when it was obvious they were no match for the home side.

They finished the match with one player down after Bassira Toure was shown a second yellow for a foul play.
