Banyana ‘mentally ready’ for Cup

2012-02-18 08:06

Banyana Banyana are mentally ready for the Twelve Nations Cyprus Women’s Cup tournament, says left-back Gabisile Hlumbane.

The tournament will take place from 28 February to March 6.

Hlumbane and her Banyana Banyana teammates are attending a training camp in Teresopolis, near Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil, where they are preparing for their maiden Olympics.

The South African senior women’s team will wrap up their training programme in Brazil with a practice match against Selecao do Marinha, the 2010 World Military Games champions.

“The three-week national training camp held in Stellenbosch last month was worth its weight in gold in terms of increasing the physical strength of the players as well as focusing on their endurance levels.

“I have no doubt that this Banyana Banyana team is the fittest group of national team players that I have been privileged to play alongside,” said Hlumbane.

The team has been drawn in a tough group that includes South Korea, New Zealand and Northern Ireland.

The women’s cup will form a key part of Banyana Banyana’s build-up to the London Olympics later this year.

The three overseas-based players – Nompumelelo Nyandeni, Roxanne Barker and Kylie-Anne Louw – are expected to join the team this week.
