Banyana to spice up Safa Women’s Under-19 Championships in Limpopo

2014-08-14 14:27

The SA Football Association (Safa) today launched the second edition of the Safa Regional Women’s League Under-19 Championships.

The tournament, which coincides with Women’s Month, kicks off on Monday and ends on August 23 at the Makhuvha Stadium in Thohoyandou, Limpopo.

The Thohoyandou event will also serve as the venue for Banyana Banyana’s friendly match against Zambia next Saturday. The under-19 event’s competitors will play their final game as the curtain raiser.

Safa chief executive Dennis Mumble said the championship was one of the elements the controlling football body was building on to develop South African women’s football.

“We need to build women’s football on the same level that we build men’s football. One of the ways to get there is by being able to host major international events to provide some encouragement for the players to perform at a high level. Our bid for the 2019 Fifa Women’s World Cup is based on that objective of us building the women’s game in the country to sharpen the focus and raise the standards in the next five years,” said Mumble during the launch at Safa House in Nasrec, Joburg, this morning.

“It is for us to put proper structures in place and get the league system running as we are doing now. There are challenges here and there. We are happy that our sponsors, Grand Parade Investment and its subsidiary company Burger King, have invested their money in football development. We hope the public will also come out and support us,” said Mumble.

“The Fifa Women’s World Cup has grown immensely and we want to make sure that we build the capacity to host the 2019 World Cup.”

Banyana are preparing for the African Women’s Championships in Nambia in October.
