Barca unconcerned as Celtic celebrate ‘historic win’

Madrid – While Celtic celebrated yesterday’s memorable 2-1 defeat of Barcelona in the Champions League, the Catalan media insisted they were unconcerned about the loss.

Barca are still top of Group G despite the shock in Celtic Park, and remain on course to reach the knockout stage for the ninth straight season.

Lionel Messi and company won their first three matches in the group and have nine points. Celtic retained second place, now with seven points.

The Scots are still three points ahead of third-placed Benfica, who beat Spartak Moscow 2-0 in the night’s other game.

Catalan daily Sport called the loss “a defeat which does not hurt”, pointing out that Barca dominated “from start to finish” and hit the woodwork twice.

Mundo Deportivo, meanwhile, claimed that “this was a completely undeserved defeat,” and pointed out that it was Barca’s first loss in the group stage since 2006.

Radio station RAC-1 commented that the defeat meant that, in order to guarantee top spot, Barca had to win at Spartak Moscow on November 20.

It was only the second defeat suffered by Barca coach Tito Vilanova since taking over from Pep Guardiola in July.

“I would like to congratulate Celtic and their wonderful fans on this win. They really got behind their team and created a spectacular ambience,” Vilanova said.

It was a memorable night for Celtic the day after the Glasgow club celebrated their 125th anniversary.

Ageless pop star Rod Stewart, together with many other fans, could not hold back the tears on an emotional occasion at Celtic Park.

The British media were full of praise for Forster, his team-mates and the Celtic fans, and unanimously labelled it a “historic win”.

Celtic coach Neil Lennon just about managed to hold back the tears as he said: “My players are real heroes, all of them. They have entered into the club’s history book with this win.

“I have experienced important moments as a player but tonight is one of the most important nights of my life ... If you want to beat Barca you have to have a great keeper, strong concentration and a little bit of luck, and that’s what we had tonight.”
