‘Beast’ is fine, says Sharks’ doctor

Springbok prop Tendai “Beast” Mtawarira will not be seriously affected by his heart condition, the Sharks’ team doctor Ewoudt van der Linde said today.

“It is not serious, not life threatening and will definitely not have an influence on his rugby career in any way,” he said in a statement.

“It does not and will not affect his ability nor the longevity of his career.”

The Sharks said Mtawarira, who turns out for the Durban franchise, had undergone treatment for the condition in Cape Town.

“Mtawarira suffers from mild heart palpitations which is a very common condition prevalent in a large number of the general public,” the union said.

“As such, it is in no way rugby-related but is simply a general medical condition.”

Mtawarira said he was not concerned.

“This was just something small that was bugging me, but it is all resolved and nothing serious to worry about at all,” he said.

Mtawarira was sidelined for the start of the Super Rugby series after picking up an ankle injury during the pre-season build-up.

The Sharks said he was recovering well from his injury, but was not expected to return to action for another few months.
