Newcomers and Cape Town trio Beatenberg were the big winners at the 21st annual South African Music Awards, hosted at the Sun City Super Bowl last night.

Hosted by motswako rapper HHP, this year’s Samas saw hip-hop – represented by Cassper Nyovest, KO and AKA – take its rightful at the top, following a great year for the genre in 2014.

Five-time Metro FM Award winner Nyovest took home the best newcomer award from his five nominations and gave one of the best performances of the night with Prime Circle.

AKA’s Levels album earned him the best male artist award of the night, and he also had a great performance as the opening act of the awards with Duncan and Kwaito legend and lifetime achievement recipient, Chomi Yabana, Mdu Masilela.

Cashtime’s KO won the often controversial and highly coveted best rap album for his Skhanda Republic, as well the massive KIA record of the year award for his monster hot Caracara with Kid X.

The hugely popular Sfiso Ncwane also took home two awards, and gave a spirited performance with Loyiso Bala, who won best contemporary worship album.

One of the most interesting performance combinations of the night came from firebrand Simphiwe Dana (who was rocking a glorious Afro) with contemporary Afrikaans pop superstar and seven-time Sama winner Kurt Darren.

Bucie won best female artist of the year, and Riana Nel walked away with two Samas to adorn her mantelpiece; for beste pop album (Afrikaans) and best selling.

DJ Clock’s Pluto (Remember You) with Beatenberg picked up most downloaded callback tone, most downloaded full track and the highest airplay awards. Mdu’s longtime friend, founding member of Kalawa Jazzmee and Trompies member Mandla Spikiri Mofokeng also received a lifetime achievement award, sponsored by Amstel. It was a befitting honour as he celebrated the 30th year of his music career.

Grammy-winning flautist Wouter Kellerman took home an international lifetime achievement award, the accolade for best classical/instrumental album as well as the award for best producer.

Many an artist used their moment on the Sama stage to appeal for an end to the continuing xenophobic violence in parts of South Africa.
