Benni booted over women

2010-06-06 09:33

Benni McCarthy and goalkeeper Rowen Fernandes were dropped from the

final Bafana Bafana World Cup squad after allegedly smuggling women into the

team’s luxury Sandton hotel.

Well-placed sources told City Press yesterday that coach Carlos

Parreira was so infuriated after hotel security showed him CCTV footage of the

two players entering their rooms with women that he immediately took the

decision to drop them like hot potatoes.

Prior to being axed, McCarthy, who is married, had made headlines

for being overweight and snubbing the media by not attending a scheduled

briefing.

His weight was flaunted as the main reason for him being

dropped.

Several sources, including a top football official and a hotel

staffer who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the incident took place

at about 4am after Bafana’s friendly against Colombia last Thursday.

The hotel staffer said: “The two players had a few drinks after the

game in the presence of female friends at the bar. The other players were there

too.”

An independent source said that McCarthy had failed two out of five

of Parreira’s requirements – fitness and discipline.

Fernandes denied the allegations, saying: “I can’t confirm any of

that.”

Several attempts to reach McCarthy were unsuccessful.
