Big Nuz run from knife-gang

2010-10-10 10:26

Money-spinning Durban kwaito group Big Nuz had to run for their lives and abandon a gig in Mthatha last weekend before they could even start performing.

A gang of patrons attacked them with knives allegedly because the trio were hitting on local women.

The outfit, consisting of Mandla “Mampintsha” Maphumulo, Sbusiso “R-Mashesha” Khomo and Mzi “Danger” Mkhwanazi, had to flee when punters at the gig in the King Sabata Dalindyebo FET college became enraged.

They had to be escorted from the hall when a riot erupted as they were going on stage.

Khomo confirmed the incident, saying chaos erupted as they climbed on stage to perform.

“It was really bad and we could have been injured. We had to leave before we even performed because of the situation.
“Knives were out and really, things were out of hand,” said Khomo.

According to a patron who was there but asked not to be named, local Mthatha guys lost their cool after seeing the trio hitting on their girlfriends outside the college campus hall before the gig.

“We were not there to take away their women. We do appreciate the beauty of nature when we see a beautiful girl, that’s all. Really there was no need for fighting,” said Khomo.

The organiser of the event, a promoter known only as TK, refused to comment.

“Whoever told you that wants publicity at my expense. I really don’t know what you are talking about and I cannot comment,” said TK.

Afrotainment manager Nkule Mthembu said he knew about the incident but not what caused it.

Otto Lukrozo, SRC president of the FET college, said that 13 students were injured in the incident.

Lukrozo said the attack took place during the Big Nuz soundcheck and confirmed that the group had to be escorted from the hall.

But he said the attack was carried out by a gang intent on robbing the audience and not as a result of anger over their alleged womanising.

This is not the first time the trio have landed in hot water over women.

In fact, the Umlilo singers have been labelled womanisers since their first victory at the South African Music Awards (Sama).

Khomo was involved in an ugly bust-up at a Sandton hotel earlier this year when two young women had a fist fight over him when the group was in Johannesburg to perform at the PSL awards.

Khomo reportedly went home with the winner.

Earlier this year, it was reported that Mkhwanazi has allegedly impregnated a Cape Town girl who he met at one of Durban’s hottest clubs, Scallas Café.
