Black SA porno flies off shelves

2010-10-03 09:36

South Africa’s first locally made black porn movie, Mapona Volume 1, is literally flying off the shelves at the yearly Sexpo at Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand.

The creators of the hour-long movie claimed it was the best-selling DVD at the expo, though this could not be confirmed at the time of going to press.

Sexpo organiser Silas Howarth said an international title was the best-selling DVD but that Mapona was doing “extremely well”, and that it heralded a new era in the SA adult movie industry.

The executive producer of Mapona, who goes by the alias Tau Morena (Sotho for Lion King), said though they had not set any targets, they were hoping to surpass the 4?000 units sold by the best-selling Afrikaans adult video, Kwaai Naai, soon.

“We are going to try and be everywhere – from Musina to Cape Town,” he said.

Morena said though the DVD was attracting a multiracial clientele at the expo, it was mostly being bought by black people.

“White people are actually quite interested and they are asking us why it took us so long,” he said.

The movie’s launch at Bar 9 in Midrand on Thursday night attracted a crowd of more than 1?000.

“We didn’t know what to expect but when over 1?000 people turned up we knew we were on the right track. People are already making enquiries about Volume 2. They are happy to watch something that reflects them.

“We are giving them something they can identify with,” said Morena.
