Black Stars book semifinal berth

2013-02-02 20:01

Save of the match: Ghana goalkeeper Abdul-Fatawu Dauda punched away Cape Verde striker Ramos Heldon’s injury time free-kick when the score was still 1-0.

Man of the Match: Dauda for his numerous saves, especially the attacks by Cape Verde late in the match.

Ghana fended off a series of second-half attacks from Cape Verde to book a berth in the Africa Cup of Nations semifinals.

Mubarak Wakaso scored from a penalty in the second half and found the back of the net a second time to confirm the semifinal match-up against the winner between Togo and Burkina Faso at the Mbombela Stadium on Wednesday.

Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah warned on the eve of the quarterfinal match that Cape Verde were going to be a difficult opponent and the four-time champions were almost pushed into extra-time by the debutants.

The Black Stars were on a knife-edge for almost the entire second half as the Blue Sharks probed continuously.

Cape Verde’s search for an equaliser turned into agony when Wakaso ran the field length to seal it at the death after everyone, including the goalkeeper, had left the goal unattended.

The second half was undoubtedly the more exhilarating of the two. In the first half, the attacks were a bit sporadic between the two sides.

For their part a new chapter was documented in the history of Cape Verde after they reached the semifinals of Afcon at the first attempt.

Their coach, Lucio Antunes, even went as far as crediting Ghana as the worthy winners, saying it was important for the tournament to have the Black Stars.
