Black managers give Transnet board the thumbs up

2010-12-09 09:07

Transnet’s new board got the thumbs up from the Black Management Forum today.

“We are particularly pleased that the diversity as per the requirements of the Employment Equity Act has been observed,” BMF president Jimmy Manyi said.

They were also happy with the appointment of Don Mkhwanazi and Tembakazi Mnyaka. Mkhwanazi was BMF president between 1987 and 1991, and Mnyaka is currently deputy president.

They hoped this meant transformation would not take a “back seat”.

“The BMF also congratulates the Minister of Public Enterprise Mr Malusi Gigaba for this bold and decisive action to get new energy into Transnet,” concluded Manyi.

Manyi had been vocal in questioning why qualified black South Africans were not exposed to the work experience their white counterparts have received, to ensure a career path that would put them in line for top positions. He had also lobbied for better representivity in management and directorship positions.

The new board would begin work at the state-owned enterprise on December 13. They were still finalising the position of group chief executive.?
