Blade’s wife appointed to energy regulator

2011-03-03 10:43

Axed SABC executive Phumelele Ntombela-Nzimande, the wife of SA Communist Party boss and Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande, has been appointed a member of the National Energy Regulator of SA (Nersa).

In a statement, Cabinet announced today that Ntombela-Nzimande would be among the four new Nersa members.

Ntombela-Nzimande left the SABC, where she was the chief people officer, a few weeks ago and was paid almost R2 million for the remainder of her contract, which was due to end in June next year.

In 2009/10, Nersa full-time members, including chief executive Smunda Mokoena, were paid between R1.2 million and R1.5 million.

Part-time members got between R132 000 and R293 000 in the same period.

Other members, who were all re-appointed, include Thembani Bukula, Dr Rod de Brissac Crompton and Ethèl Teljeur.

The five-year appointments are valid from April this year until March 2016.

Ntombela-Nzimande is also the interim chairperson of the Human Sciences Research Council.

Nersa regulates the energy industry in accordance with government laws, policies, standards and international best practices.

Last year, Nersa controversially approved Eskom’s power tariff increase of 24.8% from April last year.
