Block keeps his job

2012-06-08 13:15

John Block was comfortably re-elected as the ANC’s Northern Cape chairperson today.

Block received 496 votes, while his challenger – deputy mineral resources minister Godfrey Oliphant – got just 32.
Delegates at the conference, held at Die Eiland resort, cast their vote earlier today.

Only two of the top five positions were contested.

Zamani Saul retained the provincial secretary position by defeating former education MEC Archie Lukas by 500 votes to 28.

Deputy chairperson Kenny Mmoiemang, deputy secretary Alvin Botes and treasurer Yolanda Botha were elected unopposed.

Delegates celebrated loudly when the results were announced.

The elections were run by the Elections Agency and 531 delegates were registered to vote.

Block’s team will now lead the ANC in the province for a second term. They were first elected at a violent conference in 2008.

The Northern Cape’s is the second last provincial elective conference before the ANC’s national elective congress in Mangaung in December.

The Free State is scheduled to elect its new leaders on the 16th and 17th of this month.
