Boeremag escape attempt foiled

2011-05-31 12:13

An attempt by five of the Boeremag treason trialists to escape from custody at the Palace of Justice, in Pretoria, was foiled this morning.

Police at the scene confirmed that all five were in custody again after making a dramatic attempt to escape during a tea break.

It was a second escape attempt for Rudi Gouws and Herman van Rooyen – both escaped in 2006 and were nabbed in 2007.

Gouws, Van Rooyen and Tom Vorster, alleged leader of the Boeremag and Mike du Toit were re-arrested inside the court building.

Vis Visagie (70) was arrested on Church Square.

Three police officers and a security guard were taken to hospital after ammonia was sprayed in their eyes during the escape attempt.

The ammonia was apparently smuggled into court in nose-spray bottles.

Van Rooyen and Gouws had to wear manacles in court when they were recaptured following months on the run after they escaped from custody at the Pretoria High Court in 2006.

The manacles were found inside Court GD, where legal argument for the defence continued this morning.

All of the accused were dragged back into court in the immediate aftermath of the escape attempt.
