Book review – Long, repetitive and generally boring

2012-08-24 15:12

When lecturer and author Luke Paige travels to Saint Louis to deliver a lecture, he expects to run into fans and intellectuals, not Lola Faye Gilroy.

Lola Faye is the woman who used to work for his father in the small Variety Store he owned. She was also the woman his father had an affair with.

This was also the woman who destroyed his childhood and who directly led to his father’s murder – and here she was standing in front of him.

Though reluctant, he sits down with the woman and they discuss the details that led to their meeting, as well as the events that tie them together and those that altered both their lives irrevocably.

I’ve been a fan of Thomas H Cook since I read Instruments of Night, but this book falls far short of that. It takes a slow pace.

The entire plot is the two characters talking at a table – and repeating everything many times while they go into flashbacks.

In a word it is boring. The biggest problem is that the plot could have been completed in about 20 pages, not the 300 that make up this book.
