Boost for social spending

2010-02-17 12:47

OF the R907 billion budgeted expenditure, which represents an 8.6%

increase in spending, roughly R497 billion will go into social spending.

Within this spending, R104.6 billion has been earmarked for health,

R165.1 billion for education, R128.4 billion for social grants and R93.2 billion

for housing and community amenities.

Old age pension and disability grants will rise by R70 to R1 080 a

month while child support grants will increase by R10 to R250 a month.

“We recognise that the increase in the child support grant is

slightly below the inflation rate, but social benefit and the cost of bringing

in two million more children implies that we have to adjust this grant more

moderately,” said Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan when he presented his budget

speech in Parliament today.

He also set aside R85 billion for public order and safety while

defence received a R33.8 billion cash injection. These two expenditure items are

likely to improve efforts to secure thousands of spectators expected to watch

the soccer World Cup, which kicks off in June.
