Nxa - Hated it

Before I’m labelled a hater, let me say I’m a Riky Rick fan. He has great flow, knows who to collaborate with and, after that mega Amantombazane remix, he was in my hip-hop hall of fame. But the Boss Zonke video did little for me.

While I think the song’s cool, the video seems to be a mishmash style of Cassper Nyovest and Dirty Paraffin with spinning gusheshes in a township setting. Although director Adriaan Louw must be applauded for some individually superb shots, this doesn’t stand out as Rik’s visual best.

The video doesn’t seem to have a clear story. This may not be a prerequisite for riveting viewing, but it does help to keep the eyes on the screen.

However, I think it’s daring and cool to shoot a local music video across three cities. In some sense, the video has a 90s throwback feel – echoing the kwaito videos, in particular, that used ordinary people and locations to showcase their songs.

Nca - Loved it

When you make a song as hot as Boss Zonke, there’s going to be a lot of pressure for the video to also boss up. And a song about being the boss could easily go the way of other hip-hop videos with half-naked Bettys and an expensive brand of alcohol.

Instead, Mr Nafukwa keeps it fresh and gritty with all the right elements for a hot video: a spinning gusheshe, cameos by the members of Big Nuz, L’vovo Derrango and hip-hop’s current king, Cassper Nyovest, as well as sweeping shots of part of the Cape Flats and downtown Jozi.

Then throw in basketballers, dancers with Boom Shaka/dookie braids wearing Boss Zonke basketball jerseys and people looking superswaggy.

To top it all, what could be more bossin’ than rapping while standing on top of someone’s house?

The video is not particularly new in its theme, but it’s the immense amount of coolness and swag they managed to squeeze into four minutes and 15 seconds that makes it work.
