Boxing SA lashes out at promotion company’s ‘abuse of dominance’

2013-09-18 16:13

Moffat Qithi, the chief executive of Boxing SA (BSA) has lashed out at Rodney Berman’s Golden Gloves Promotions (GGP), accusing the boxing company of abusing its dominant position.

He made the accusations in the high court in Johannesburg as he gave evidence in a bid to prove he’s not guilty of defamation.

The defamation claim was brought against him and BSA by promoter Branco Milenkovic.

Milenkovic has cited statements he alleges Qithi made after former International Boxing Federation (IBF) woman’s welterweight champion Noni Tenge lost her title last year.

More dirty boxing laundry has been aired in court: Qithi is insisting that GGP barred SuperSport from allowing Eastern Cape promoter Andile Sidinile to have his tournament filmed.

Qithi claims that SuperSport’s explanation was that Berman is understood to have an exclusive “long-term” contract with the private broadcaster.

This is despite SuperSport allegedly having confirmed to Sidinile that his show would be screened, only to make an eleventh-hour cancellation following complaints from GGP.

“That is abuse of a dominant position, closing others out, and it should be taken to the Competition Tribunal,” said Qithi, a former chief operating officer at the Walter Sisulu University.

During the proceedings, GGP, Branco Sports Productions and Eyethu Boxing Promotions have been described as the big three boxing promotions companies in South Africa.

Cross-examination of Qithi by Milenkovic’s legal team head Advocate Laurance Hodes continues.
