On December 6, Reuters photographer Siegfried Modola began to capture images of the initiation and coming-of-age ceremonies of young women of the indigenous tribe of Pokot in Baringo County, Kenya.

Pokot girls take part in the ceremonies to mark their journey from girlhood to womanhood.

The Pokot live about 80km from the town of Marigat in Baringo County. More than 100 girls took part in initiations, which begin at night and last until

the following day.

Before the ceremony, the girls are secluded for more than a month, as Pokot tradition dictates, out of sight of the men in the community. After the ceremony, the young women will be able to get married.

For most of them, their marriages have already been arranged. During the ceremony, the girls will sing and remain standing throughout the night and during the next morning.
