Britain ready to help with Australia flood relief

2011-01-12 15:02

British Prime Minister David Cameron has offered assistance to his Australian counterpart to deal with deadly floods threatening the city of Brisbane, his spokesperson said today.

Cameron also offered his condolences to the Australian people after the worst floods in decades to strike Australia’s third-largest city killed at least 12 people and forced thousands to flee their homes.

“This morning I spoke to the Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard to send the condolences of everyone in this house and everyone in this country for the appalling floods and damage that have been done in Queensland,” Cameron told parliament.

“We are all thinking of the Australian people at this difficult time.”

Cameron’s spokesperson said earlier that during the telephone call with Gillard the prime minister had offered Britain’s help with the relief efforts.

“He said the UK was ready to offer assistance if that should prove necessary,” the spokesperson added.

The spokesperson did not say what form such assistance could take.

Thousands of people fled to higher ground today and Brisbane’s centre was a “ghost town” as the river city of two million battened down as deadly floods inundate vast areas of Australia’s northeast.?
