British warship docks in Malta with Libya evacuees

2011-02-26 07:18

Valletta – A British Royal Navy frigate with 207 evacuees docked in Malta from the rebel-held Libyan port of Benghazi today after a 35-hour Mediterranean crossing through rough seas.

The ship, the HMS Cumberland, left Benghazi on Thursday and travelled at reduced speed because of the weather, port officials said.

The vessel was carrying British nationals and citizens from more than 20 countries fleeing the violence in Libya, the Royal Navy said.

Another British military vessel, the HMS York, was dispatched to Libya from Gibraltar yesterday to help evacuation efforts.
