Bronkhorstspruit Dam victims named

The names of the man and two teenagers killed in a motorboat accident on the Bronkhorstspruit Dam have been made public.

Eddie dos Santos (42), Ramon da Costa (17) and his girlfriend Mikaela de Araujo (16) were flung from Dos Santos’ motorboat yesterday afternoon, the Beeld newspaper reported.

According to Beeld, Dos Santos’ goddaughter, Claudia Barros-Botha (25), and her husband Gawie Botha (29) were being towed by the boat on an inflatable chair.

“We hit a wave then me and my wife fell off the inflatable chair. When we surfaced the boat was going in circles and nobody was in it,” Botha was quoted as saying.

“The boat continued circling for a few minutes. I did not see it hit Ramon or Mikaela, but I did see when it hit Eddie and then come to a halt.”

Dos Santos was presumably thrown from the boat when he made a sharp turn to pick up Botha and Barros-Botha.

All five were taken to shore by members of the Catamaran Club.

Dos Santos’ wife, Dawn, fainted when she heard what happened, dam safety official Barry Page told Beeld.

“She held her husband’s body in her arms and kept screaming ‘Eddie! Wake up Eddie!’ It was terrible to see.”

Page said they were all wearing life-jackets.
