Brothers’ death remains mystery

2010-09-07 08:45

Healthcare group Netcare did not know what had caused the death of two brothers at its Olivedale facility, north of Johannesburg, but tests were continuing today.

“While there are no other suspected cases, the hospital is leaving nothing to chance,” a statement read.

“Since medical staff became aware of the possible illness, all necessary processes and procedures have, as per protocol, been adhered to.”

Tests conducted so far have not positively identified the illness, but additional investigations are under way, including specialised tests for viral infections.

Hospital management expressed condolences to their family and asked that their privacy be respected.

The National Institute of Communicable Diseases formed part of the investigative team.

The hospital group said casual contact with family, friends, hospital staff or previous casual contact with the deceased did not pose a risk.

Precautionary measures are being taken and all close contacts and medical personnel are being monitored.

No one is in quarantine and no other cases have been recorded.

Although neither of the deceased travelled out of the country recently, both had had contact with wildlife.

The Star reported today that two brothers died within 24 hours of each other at the hospital.
