Bulls could play at Orlando Stadium

2010-03-20 11:02

If the Vodacom Bulls qualify to host a semifinal or final of the Vodacom Super 14 competition in May, it will be played at the Orlando Stadium in Soweto, subject to signing an agreement with Stadium Management South Africa and the City of Johannesburg.

This is necessitated by the fact Loftus Versfeld is being used as a World Cup venue and will be handed over as a “clean stadium” by the time the knockout stages of the Super 14 starts, ruling out the possibility of staging the match on home turf.

The Bulls hosted semifinals in 2007 and 2009 and the final in 2009 at Loftus Versfeld.

Orlando Stadium recently had a R300-million rebuild for the Soccer World Cup. The 41?500-seater stadium will also host the official Fifa concert to celebrate the start of the 2010 Football World Cup.

The head of Stadium Management South Africa, Jacques Grobbelaar, says of this possible venture: “Together we are going to make history.”

It will be the first time that a rugby match of this magnitude will be played at this iconic venue.

The Blue Bulls Company will iron out the finer details with regards to tickets, transport and communicate in good time with their suite holders, season ticket holders, supporters and other relevant parties. – Sapa
