Bulls give assurance after fans see red

2011-04-30 14:47

Blue Bulls CEO Barend van Graan today called for an understanding from their supporters with the union’s Super Rugby team set to face the Chiefs in a red strip at Loftus Versfeld later in the afternoon.

The union faced an outcry from fans after a decision was made to play once off in a predominantly red shirt – the colour of rivals the Lions – as opposed to the traditional blue kit.

The Bulls said the decision had been made following a request from one of their sponsors as part of a multi-million-rand advertising campaign.

“To date, Vodacom has invested millions in the Bulls to buy, develop and retain top players, but also restored the name of the stadium and gave the name Loftus Versfeld back to the Bulls and its supporters,” said Van Graan, the CEO of the Blue Bulls Company.

Van Graan said it had been “easy” for the Blue Bulls board and the team to agree to the sponsor’s request.

The Bulls have assured supporters, whose traditional cry is “my blood is blue”, that the team will return to their usual shirts when they face the Rebels at Loftus in their next match on May 14.
