Bunny-suit reporter has parliament hopping mad

2010-12-22 10:38

Kiev – A Ukrainian journalist who dressed in a bunny suit in a stunt to highlight the hypocrisy of his country’s parliamentarians was insulted and ignored when trying to interview elected officials, local reports said today.

Journalist Roman Vitoniev donned a head-to-toe furry white outfit with floppy pink ears attached to interview legislators about a massive brawl in parliament last week that left five members hospitalised and dozens with cuts and bruises.

But instead parliament spokesperson Iryna Kameliuk said Vitoniev’s was wearing “inappropriate attire” and instructed him to leave the premises.

A group of reporters then asked Kameliuk whether she considered fistfights between parliament members appropriate behaviour. She ignored the question.

Most parliament members refused to speak with Vitonov on camera. Aleksander Efremov, leader of the majority, declined an interview saying “sorry, I’m in a hurry”.

Another parliament member told Vitoniev his rabbit costume displayed “insufficient respect for the national legislature”.

“If the Verkhovna Rada is turning into a circus, then this needs to be officially acknowledged and people need to dress appropriately,” Vintoniev said.

The fight in parliament last Friday pitted members for the Regions of Ukraine majority against the minority Motherland party. More than 70 deputies participated in the melee.

The pro-Russia Regions members employed superior weight and numbers to defeat their opponents.
