Last year Miley Cyrus’ bottom hogged all the attention at the MTV Video Music Awards when she gyrated it against Robin Thicke during their performance.

At this year’s awards another famous bum is likely to get a lot of airtime: Nicki Minaj, who’s heading to South Africa at the end of September for the TribeOne Dinokeng Festival, is set to perform her new single Anaconda.

The video has garnered tens of millions of views online – beating Cyrus’ Wrecking Ball  for most YouTube views within 24 hours – and the sight of Minaj’s backside has sent temperatures and tempers soaring.

Of course, the MTV VMAs 2014 are about more than just twerking, perky (almost always female) butts and red carpet gossip, or so the organisers would have us believe.

The awards, which air at 3am local time, are being hosted at The Forum in Los Angeles.

The reigning queen of the world (as crowned by her fans, the often terrifying Beyhive), Beyoncé, leads the field with eight nominations including video of the year, best female and best collaboration for several tracks from the self-titled album she released absolutely by surprise last December. She will also perform on the night.

Eminem has seven nominations, tying with newcomer Iggy Azalea.

Mr Beyoncé – Jay Z – Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus, Pharrell Williams, Ariana Grande, Lorde, Sam Smith, Zedd, Avicii, Pitbull, Jason Derulo and Hayley Williams are also multiple nominees.

Beyoncé has already bagged 12 VMAs, Eminem has 11 and they’ll be eyeing Peter Gabriel and Lady Gaga’s 13 apiece tomorrow morning.

If Beyoncé wins in all eight categories where she’s nominated, she’ll tie with Madonna for a record-breaking 20 career wins.

Fans have been able to vote online since last month and there’s a first on the categories list: the best lyric video, whose winner will be decided entirely by social media votes.
