Bystanders shout ‘jump’ as man attempts suicide

2010-07-07 13:03

Bystanders shouted “jump” when they found out a man was threatening

to throw himself off the Stadium on Main Parkade in Claremont, Cape Town

today.

Medicopter Ground Support spokesperson Tristan Wadeley said: “It

was disappointing to hear some of the bystanders shouting ‘jump!’ when they

found out what was going on.”

Police, paramedics and rescue crews were on standby at the Stadium

on Main after the man threatened to jump from the roof, which was around eight

storeys high, he said.

The street was cordoned off by security officials and bystanders

lined the barrier tape trying to get a glimpse of what was happening.

Police negotiators and a work colleague of the man were able to

talk him down after about he had spent around an hour on the roof, said

Wadeley.

The man was taken by ambulance to Groote Schuur Hospital for

further assessment.

In April, the body of a well-known Cape Town property developer

Chris Drummond (52) was found outside the Stadium on Main parking garage.
