CAF fines Ethiopia

2013-01-23 15:06

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has slapped the Ethiopian FA with a fine for fans’ misbehaviour earlier in the week.

The Ethiopian spectators hurled missiles in the direction of the match officials and the opposition in their 1-1 draw against Zambia in their opening Group C 2013 Africa Cup of Nations tie at Mbombela Stadium on Monday.

Spectators were reacting to the red card handed to their team goalkeeper, Jamel Tassew. The match was held up because of the fans’ behaviour.

Following a CAF hearing yesterday, a $10 000 fine was imposed today, of which $5 000 was suspended for the remainder of the tournament.

Tassew will miss the Walya Antelopes’ remaining group fixtures against Burkina Faso and Nigeria as a result of his two-match suspension.

But the goalkeeper is eligible should Ethiopia move on to the knockout stages of the competition.

CAF also issued a warning to the 2013 Afcon Local Organising Committee (LOC) after security glitches at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Sunday in the Group B match between DR Congo and Ghana.

The Congolese fans twice went onto the field in the second half without being picked up by the security personnel on the ground.

CAF said: “The board decided to address a warning letter to the LOC advising them that they need to reinforce the security in Port Elizabeth.

“The board also decided to address a warning letter to DR Congo as the visiting team is held responsible for the behaviour of their supporters.”

In Group C, defending African champions Zambia will play Nigeria’s Super Eagles, with Ethiopia facing Burkina Faso.

All four sides have a point each after the first round of games played.
