CHIT CHAT: Kurt Schoonraad

2010-05-07 12:50

Kurt… is big on family. My goose and I have an eight-month-old

baby named Jack. He’s truly beautiful but I still can’t believe I have a child!

Comedy… is honest, real and uncomplicated. It is not about looking into a

joke book, but getting content from the right source. And a lot of South African

problems are the right source.

Joburg people… are really great and I had no idea. I work here

regularly, but I had never got the chance to soak in the culture and atmosphere.

Here it is not about colour; it’s about the number of tenders you’ve been

scoring.

The City of Gold… creeped me out for a long time because I had a

life-threatening experience here about six years ago. I was staying in Westdene

with a bunch of guys from Cape Town when we were attacked. They took all our

belongings and assaulted us. I thought I was going to die.

Going Nowhere Slowly… gave me an opportunity as a young comedian

starting out. The show was unscripted and I was involved in it for almost five

years.

Stand-up comedy… has always been my first career choice. I had a

small business but I left it. Live comedy is great because you can do it on any

medium and you only have one chance at it.

Jou Ma Se Comedy Club… is a comedy joint that I run and it has

formed an important part of how comedy is done in Cape Town. It’s a great

platform for comedians from all over the country to present their material and

over the years people such as Nik Rabinowitz and Ndumiso Lindi had a shot at the

club. We continuously give young up-coming acts an opportunity to work with some

of the best comedians in the country.

Spiders and Mayonnaise… is a one-man show; an autobiographical

piece about my thoughts and ideas on living in our country. The name includes

two of my pet hates. I have a primal fear of spiders. As for mayonnaise, as soon

as you open the jar lid I want to vomit.

My top 3… local comedians are Riaad Moosa, he carefully sculpts

his jokes and is flawless in delivering them. John Vlismas has an amazing

comedy mind. He’s young but has the experience of a veteran. He’s performed more

gigs than any other local stand-up. Dave Levinsohn is a comedy genius who never

repeats the same set twice.
