The iconic St George’s Cathedral in Cape Town will feature in the hit TV show Homeland, which stars Claire Danes as CIA agent Carrie Mathison.

The fourth instalment of the thriller is being filmed around the Mother City, where Danes has been spotted at restaurants ranging from Harbour House in Kalk Bay to The Test Kitchen in Woodstock.

Today, passers-by gawked when they spotted the 35-year old Hollywood star surrounded by film crew and trucks on the pavement next to St George’s Cathedral, from where former Archbishop Desmond Tutu frequently addresses the nation.

Even weather television presenter Derek van Dam was in on the action.

“Just watched the filming of #Homeland with Claire Danes in #capetown,” he posted on Twitter today.

The crew said they were filming a funeral at the ornate building with its high stained-glass windows, and that they might be busy there for a few more days.

The first trailer for the latest season of Homeland was released online, causing ripples of excitement around the world over the weekend.

The video was presented during a press lunch session for the show in Beverly Hills, US, on Friday.

A statement by the show’s producers, Showtime, reveals that Mathison’s latest mission is set in Pakistan and Afghanistan, and not in Turkey as previously thought.

They also revealed that Life of Pi actor Suraj Sharma would co-star in the series.

They said it would start screening on October 5.
