Cameroon – Soccer fever in the air as country celebrates independence

2010-05-28 07:54

Last Thursday, May 20, Cameroon marked 50 years of independence

from the French and British colonial rule. And in Johannesburg, spirits remain

high among Cameroonians living in South Africa.

The French-speaking Cameroon gained its independence from France in

January 1960 while the English-speaking Southern Cameroon gained its

independence from Britain in 1961. However, the two sides joined hands in

October 1961 to form the Republic of Cameroon.

With 2010 being a World Cup year and coinciding with the

independence celebrations, a special soccer tournament was organised whereby

locally-based Cameroonian regional football associations and community groups

had been gathering in festive spirit each weekend to support their teams.

Titled the 50th Jubilee Anniversary Football Tournament, the finals

where held last Sunday at the Rhodes Park football grounds.

This, according to the tournament organisers, was a perfect build

up to soon welcoming their national soccer team, Indomitable Lions, to South

Africa for the world showpiece.
