Camp for protest-hit Bekkersdal matriculants

2013-10-25 08:25

The Gauteng education department has intervened in protest-hit Bekkersdal, west of Johannesburg, to protect matriculants writing exams, an official has said.

“The department will, on a temporary basis, place these learners in a special residential camp outside the community, where they will be able to write their exams and receive study tuition,” spokesman Gershwin Chuenyane said today.

“The necessity for continuing with this arrangement will be evaluated on a weekly basis,” he said.

About 450 pupils from Bekkersdal were expected to sit the final exams from Monday to November 29.

In Gauteng, 99 504 full-time candidates would write at 1 274 venues.

The results were expected to be announced on January 7 2014.

Chuenyane appealed to community leaders in Bekkersdal to assist the department in stabilising schools in the area and ensuring the future of young people was not put in jeopardy.

Violent protests in Bekkersdal have affected schooling there.

Bekkersdal residents have been on the rampage demanding the Westonaria municipality be placed under administration.

The protest spilled over to nearby Simunye township yesterday.
