Can Agang stand the test of time?: You go girl!

2013-02-24 10:00

This week’s launch of Agang heralded a new era in our political discourse, and strengthens the ethos and values of our constitutional democracy.

It is premature and smacks of unfounded conjecture to suggest that the platform will succeed or fail in the political arena, as if some have resorted to divination.

Mamphela Ramphele might not have let all the cats out of the bag regarding the platform’s identity or policy documents, but it’s a “party political platform” with worldwide consultations anticipated in due course.

The terms might be obfuscatory jargon, but it is fair to adopt a wait-and-see attitude rather than being unnecessarily pernickety.

It is invigorating for a woman to harbour such a positive mind-set aimed at developing and fortifying the country as a real democracy.

Ramphele raises matters of national importance, such as the disastrous education system that is slowly veering into a cesspool at the expense of our children.

It cannot be that the current electoral system, which in effect negates accountability, represents the real interests of the electorate.

It is fallacious and preposterous to disingenuously compare Agang to Cope and the UDM.

The fact is these are utterly different political groupings led by different leaders.

A vote is a secret that means the cross can go either way and, like any other aspiring leader, Ramphele is entitled to be afforded an opportunity before being thrown to the lions.

She has entrenched credibility, consistency and contributed hugely during the struggle to ensure that we attained the freedom we enjoy today.
