Cape Town Fashion Week Day 3: emerging designers show their flair

2012-07-28 12:29

The third day of the Mercedes-Benz Cape Town fashion week kicked off with a presentation of new designers by the Cape Town Fashion Council.

“Icons in the Making” are part of an association between AFI, the CTFC and fashion schools.

The five emerging designers invited to exhibit were Pumeza Mekuto of Black Coal Clothing, Celeste Lee Arendse of Selfi, Robyn Victor of August Clothing, Terien Malherbe of Non-European and Maloti Mothoni of Strato.

Black Coal played around with colour-blocking and denim, eschewing the current “trendy” colours and sticking to red, yellow and blue.

Selfi’s pleats added texture to key pieces which included sheer shirt-dresses and skirts, while August’s use of print made the collection decidedly fun.

Non-European’s collection showed wearable pieces in muted pastel colours while Strato went funky with vests and shift dresses.

The collections, while not ground-breaking, showed potential by adding pizazz to the ready-to-wear market.

The later shows were dedicated to established designers, starting with veterans Ruff Tung whose collection included peplum dresses with a twist, pastel skirts, shorts, white shirts and dresses and blouses with peasant necklines.

Michelle Ludek’s collection saw maxi dresses in vibrant orange, neon green and blue while keeping the silhouette spartan.

Thula Sindi featured pleather, latex, and prints on dresses, skirts and tops and stuck to his winning formula of feminine pencil skirts with dark prints, only two pieces straying to the bright side in blue and white.

Ruald Rheeder’s collection was a riot of colour for mens and womenswear in red, orange, bright prints and colour-blocking.

The rest of the night was dedicated to menswear collections as Fabiani, Viyella and Carducci shown off-site at The Reserve.

Suits, chinos and shirts contrasted in the colour-blocking trend that South African designers are so in love with right now.

Today is the last day of the fashion extravaganza and will see designers David Tlale, Lalesso, Tart, Adriaan Kuiters, Spero Villioti, Stefania Morland and Dax Martin close off the the show in what’s sure to be a spectacular presentation of sexy swimwear and high couture.
