Cape Town gears up for a fashion razzle dazzle

2012-07-25 15:13

THERE’s only a few hours left until some of Mzansi’s leading fashion designers dazzle the Mother City when they unveil their Spring/Summer 2012 collections at the inaugural Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Cape Town.

There are 26 designers who’ll be showcasing in 18 shows that run until Saturday night. The razzle and dazzle will include ready-to-wear garments and avant garde creations.

While some designers will stick to the simple stroll down the ramp, others like Gavin Rajah and David Tlale plan elaborate surprises - as expected of the drama kings of the catwalk.

Couture creator Gavin Rajah will unveil a collection themed Luminescent Luxury, which he says is inspired by the “love poetry of Boccaccio, the language of flowers and the 1950s la dolce vita mood of Italy”.

The collection will include cropped bra corsets, pencil skirts with flourishes on back panels, peplum tops and multi-panelled dresses with concealed pleats and visible dart detail.

“The focus is on detail, with fabrics that are sensuous to the touch. The pieces are deceptively simple but involve intricate construction and seaming,” says Rajah.

Rajah will also showcase a handbag collection designed for Muldooney’s of London.

The designer, who is also one of the original founder of the decade-old Cape Town Fashion Week, announced his plan to launch the Gavin Rajah Award for Design Excellence. According to his press statement, the award will go to “an exceptionally talented individual who shows promise as an entrepreneur in the fashion industry”.

As for Tlale, the Joburg-based designer’s show is highly anticipated as the venue has been kept a closely-guarded secret. Last year saw the designer showcase at the Bromwell Gallery in the Bo Kaap where models posed as mannequins.

Other designers to look out for include Thula Sindi whose show sold out, Stefania Morland, Kluk CGDT, Habits, Lalesso, Craig Port, Spero Villioti and Durban’s Dax Martin whose usually sizzling swimwear designs will include an athletic range.

This year also marks the return of HipHop, Jenny Button’s Philosophy and Rosenworth to the catwalk.
