Cape Town liquor enforcement unit issues R21 200 in fines

2011-07-11 11:09

The City of Cape Town’s liquor enforcement unit issued spot fines totalling R21 200 during weekend operations in Parow, Bellville, Eerste River and Elsies River.

The unit inspected 14 premises in total and issued fines for contravention of the Business Act, the Community Safety By-Law, and the Land Use Ordinance, the city said in a statement today.

“It was concerning to note that most of the night clubs inspected had compromised the safety of their patrons by allowing passageways leading to and from their fire escape doors to be obstructed,” said city spokesman for specialised law enforcement services assistant chief Nathan Ladegourdie.

The unit also addressed a problem shebeen in Gamka Street, Eerste River, after receiving complaints from the community about the loud music and disorderly behaviour of patrons.

The operations formed part of the city’s ongoing clamp-down on illegal shebeens and night clubs to ensure compliance with existing city by-laws.

The liquor enforcement unit would continue to conduct unannounced inspections on night clubs and shebeens to address the concerns of the surrounding communities, it said.
