Cape bathers warned to beware as jellyfish ‘bloom’ off coast

2010-07-03 15:03

Bathers and surfers at Kommetjie and Scarborough have been warned

to be cautious as a “sizeable bloom” of jellyfish closes in on the shoreline of

the area, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) says.

The NSRI said in a statement that marine researcher Deborah

Robertson-Andersson reported the jellyfish bloom, saying that bathers and

surfers were at “some risk” of being stung in the coastal area outside Cape

Town.

“Bathers and surfers are at some risk of being stung due to the

large numbers being witnessed in a concentrated area.”

People stung by the jellyfish should apply vinegar to the

sting.

“While the sting from these jellyfish is relatively moderate to

humans, the risk is that a bloom could lead to a surfer or bather being stung

multiple times, which may be harmful.”

The NSRI said that in the event of them sustaining multiple stings,

people should consult a doctor.
