Hashim Amla said he was honoured and privileged to be selected as the new Proteas test captain.

The Cape Cobras batsman was today unveiled as the skipper to lead the test side after the Cricket SA (CSA) board unanimously agreed on Amla (31) ahead of AB de Villiers and Faf du Plessis, who were also in the running.

“It’s an honour and a privilege for me to captain the test team. I’m hoping for good times ahead,” said Amla during a press conference at the Sandton Convention Centre today.

Amla added that his experience would add value to the team and that he would be his own man.

Proteas coach Russell Domingo expressed his confidence in Amla, saying he was the right man for the job having displayed leadership skills before the nod by the CSA.

“This is just an extension of what Hashim has been doing behind the scenes; it is now formal,” said Domingo.

CSA chief executive Haroon Lorgat assured Amla that the cricket body would support him.

Lorgat said: “We know Amla is a quality individual with experience, we will support him fully...”

According to Lorgat, Castle Lager – the Proteas’ main sponsor – did not have a problem with Amla’s refusal to endorse the brand for religious reasons.
