Carl Pistorius, brother of murder-accused paralympian Oscar Pistorius, has pleaded not guilty to a culpable homicide charge in the Vanderbijlpark Magistrates’ Court.

Prosecutor Johan Venter told the court today the main charge against Carl Pistorius was culpable homicide.

The first alternative charge was reckless or negligent driving, and the second one driving without reasonable consideration for another person using the road.

Magistrate Buks du Plessis asked Pistorius to plead on the first charge.

Standing in the dock, arms folded, looking at Du Plessis, Pistorius said: “I plead not guilty, your worship.”

He pleaded not guilty to the two alternative charges. They relate to an accident on March 8, 2008 that led to the death of 36-year-old Maria Barnard. The court heard she died in hospital on March 14, 2008.

The State proceeded to call its first witness, Anton Coetzee.

Carl’s appearance comes a day before Oscar Pistorius is expected to challenge the bail conditions the Pretoria Magistrates’ Court imposed on him.

The court granted Oscar bail of R1 million on February 22 after he was charged with the murder of his girlfriend, law graduate and model Reeva Steenkamp, in his Pretoria home on February 14.

Carl Pistorius’ trial continues.
