Limpopo premier Cassel Mathale has resigned.

“This is to inform the public that I have handed a letter of resignation as the premier of Limpopo provincial government and as a member of the provincial legislature to the speaker.

“This is in line with the decision of the African National Congress to recall me as the premier of Limpopo province,” he said in a statement.

The statement comes after Mathale earlier today informed MECs and mayors of his resignation.

It is understood that Stanley Chupu Mathabatha will take Mathale's place and that axed minister of cooperative governance and traditional affairs Richard Baloyi may replace Mathabatha as South Africa’s ambassador to the Ukraine.

City Press reported yesterday that Mathale cut short a trip abroad to hear the news that he would be sacked.

“Mathale was on holiday in Italy. Zuma got hold of him and told him to come back home urgently. Mathale had to cut his trip to Italy short and returned to the country. When he landed at the OR Tambo International Airport he drove straight to Luthuli house, where Zuma broke the news to him,” said a source.
