Catfight: Kelly Khumalo arrested

2013-10-08 18:35

Afro-pop singer Kelly Khumalo is set to spend the night behind bars.

Khumalo was arrested together with her sister by Hillbrow police this afternoon for allegedly assaulting the wife of Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa.

A police officer who did not want to be named because he is not authorised to speak to the media said Khumalo and her sister were arrested after handing themselves over at the Hillbrow Police Station.

The officer said Khumalo’s lawyer tried to have Khumalo and her sister freed on bail but failed to do so as the controversial singer did not have cash on her.

“They will sleep in police holding custody today and apply for bail tomorrow,” said the officer.

Gauteng provincial police spokesperson Lungelo Dlamini confirmed that Khumalo and her sister had been arrested. “They were arrested today. Their attorney was busy with a bail application and (we) would know everything tomorrow,” he said.

It is alleged that Khumalo and her sister were phoned by the investigating officer who asked them to hand themselves over following a decision to prosecute.

About two weeks ago the investigating officer obtained a warning statement from the Qinisela hit maker after they pulled her off stage when she was performing at the Jabulani Amphitheatre.

According to the charge sheet, Khumalo found Meyiwa chatting to his wife, Mandisa, on Empire Road near the M1 South, Joburg.

It is alleged that Khumalo stopped her car and assaulted Mandisa with open hands, without provocation. Khumalo’s younger sister, who was sitting in the award-winning artist’s car, joined in.

“Mandisa sustained injuries to her face after the two scratched her on her face with their nails,” said the officer.
