Cele ‘relaxing’ at home

2011-08-19 14:35

Police chief General Bheki Cele was relaxing at home today after being hospitalised earlier in the week for what was described as a routine medical check-up.

Colonel Vishnu Naidoo said today that Cele had told him he was “relaxing at home”. Cele reportedly experienced chest pains on Sunday afternoon and went to the Little Company of Mary Hospital in Groenkloof, but he was later taken by ambulance to the Zuid-Afrikaanse Hospital.

He was admitted late on Sunday afternoon.

In a statement on Monday, police said he had been admitted for a routine general medical check-up which warranted staying in the hospital for at least 24 hours.

On Wednesday, Zuid-Afrikaanse Hospital general manager Tienie van den Berg confirmed that Cele was still in the hospital. He could not comment on his condition.

Van den Berg could not be reached for comment on Friday.

It was not known when Cele was discharged.

The public protector recently accused Cele of improper, unlawful conduct that amounted to maladministration in connection with two controversial building leases, one in Pretoria and the other in Durban.
