Celebrities take Mandela spirit to Alex

2014-07-18 20:38

Isidingo actors and SA Tourism employees did their bit for Mandela Day by visiting the Abangani Enkosini home in Alexandra, north of Joburg.

The home feeds and takes care of the orphaned children from around the township.

Isidingo actor Keketso Semoko said the first Mandela Day without Madiba was saddening. However, she said the best we can do is to take pride in his values and legacy.

Semoko was one of the guests who read stories to the children gathered at the orphanage.

More than 150 children sang religious songs while volunteers prepared food as part of the 67 minutes initiative.

Later on, the contingent visited the Nelson Mandela-inspired tourist attraction at Lilliesleaf farm, where some of the children got to learn about the history of the liberation struggle.

At the farm, the kids watched a 12-minute film on the Rivonia Trial and other historical moments.

Simphiwe Mvovo, who lives at the home, said Mandela was a hero who fought for freedom and it was his wish to shake his hand for the role he played in the liberation struggle.

Meanwhile, SA Tourism CEO Thulani Nzima said there is a greater meaning behind Mandela Day and it should not start and end with one good deed.

“As we take stock of our country, those less fortunate than us should not be left behind and our involvement with the home is not a once-off but a continuous effort to share the little that we have away from the glare of the media,” he said.
