Census 2011: Be counted or jailed

2011-10-21 09:44

An increasing number of South Africans are refusing to be counted in the national census and could face jail time or a heavy fine.

Stats SA has now applied for court permission to enforce the provisions of the Statistics Act, TimesLive reported today.

Census 2011 runs from October 10 to 31 and citizens have to answer all questions put to them. If they refuse to comply, they could face a R10 000 fine or six months’ imprisonment.

Stats SA would not reveal how many people were refusing to participate, but said warning letters would first be sent to people, informing them of the process and telling them what would happen if they refused to comply.

Legal action would only be taken after an assessment of the situation was made once the census was completed.

Residents of Moutse in Limpopo apparently refused to cooperate with census officials due to unhappiness that local people were not used as enumerators, but officials say the issue has been resolved.
