Channel O awards come to Soweto

2012-09-08 09:00

South Africans have scooped about a third of the nominations in the upcoming Channel O Music Video Awards.

Now in their ninth year, the awards celebrate music videos and musicians from the Mother Continent.

This year, there are 77 nominations spread over 14 categories.

The kwaito category, which locals are as possessive of as they are the pantsula dance, is dominated by Mzansi stars. Contenders include Kabelo featuring Professor, Spikiri and various artists, Big Nuz, Ees with Mandoza and The Dogg with Brickz.

Khuli Chana’s Tswa Daar has proved a firm favourite with nominations in the Most Gifted Male category, Most Gifted Hip-Hop Video and Most Gifted Video of the Year.

He’ll battle it out in the latter with Angola’s Big Nelo, fellow South African Pro, Tanzania’s Ay and awards favourite Nigeria’s D’Banj.

Girl power comes in the form of wonderchild Zahara, DJ Zinhle, genre-bending sensation Toya Delazy, Bucie and Mozambique’s
Lizha James.

DJ Cleo, Mi Casa, Donald and Lloyd Cele also managed to grab a nomination each.

According to Solly Moeng, the head of programming at DStv, the nominees are “testament to the way music videos are playing an important role in the promotion of African music”.

The awards will be staged in Soweto for the first time at the Walter Sisulu Square in Kliptown on November 17.

Voting closes at midnight on November 8.

Voting platforms include:
» SMS – send artist voting code (on the Channel O website) to +27 83 920 8406;
» Web and WAP – channelo.tv;
» Facebook – facebook.com/channelotv; and
» Mxit – Go to TradePost -> Music -> More Channels -> Channel O
