Charity kills the spirit

2014-08-17 15:00

Charity is a step back in alleviating poverty. At the recent economic summit held in the US, President Barack Obama stressed the need to increase funding to Africa.

How long must Africa depend on foreign funding for most of its development agendas?

In his book, Bullets or Ballots, Dr Ruben Richards writes about two methods of reducing poverty.

The easy method is through financial aid and charity. The difficult way is through teaching the poor how to become rich and to create their own financial aid. Look at the vast amount of money raised to feed and clothe the starving masses in Africa.

How long are we going to feed and clothe them? Imagine how it would be if we were to equip these people with skills.

The underlying result will amount in a good story to tell. It seems difficult until it is done.

My family resisted being trapped in economic bondage and acted decisively. The time is always right to do what is right.

Charity is good but it creates a dependency syndrome and laziness.

Instead of giving someone a fish, teach him how to fish and break the poverty chain and dependency syndrome.
