Cheers to wine lovers who braved Soweto chill

2012-09-08 13:26

The TOPS! Soweto Wine Festival has become a permanent fixture on the Jozi social calendar, and come the beginning of this month, the UJ Soweto Campus resembles a concert venue with hundreds of cars lining the field.

This year was no different.

While the increasingly unpredictable Jozi weather bestowed lashes of rain and thunder, determined wine lovers retrieved their coats and fashionable Wellies to attend the opening night on Thursday.

The VIP area was hosted by TOPS! at Spar, and Idols judge Unathi Msengana took to the stage to serenade the guests, who were nibbling juicy mini-burgers, succulent beef kebabs and fresh chicken wraps.

Needless to say, there was plenty of wine, bubbly and cocktails.

Downstairs, about 2 000 people flitted from stand to stand sampling wines, taking notes and buying bottles. Everywhere you looked, patrons were engaged in earnest discussion with wine reps and cellar masters.
