Child dies in Duduza tornado

2011-10-03 07:48

An eight-year-old child died and 166 people were injured when a tornado hit Duduza outside Nigel, east of Johannesburg, an Ekurhuleni official said today.

“One-hundred-and-sixty-six people were treated and transported to various nearby hospitals such as Pholosong in Tsakane and Far East Rand hospital in Springs,” said Ekurhuleni spokesperson Justice Mohale.

“The tornado that wrecked havoc in Masechaba Extension 2 in Duduza left an eight-year-old child dead and completely destroyed more than 150 houses,” Mohale said.

Power lines were disrupted and trees were uprooted during the storm yesterday.

Ekurhuleni mayor Mondli Gungubele was due to address the media at the Duduza customer care centre this morning.
