Chinese lunar calendar

2012-01-28 14:22

» The Chinese lunar calendar is the longest chronological record in history, dating back to 2 637BC.

» Western astrology (based on the movements of the sun) has 12 cycles within a calendar year, while Chinese astrology (based on lunar cycles) works on 12-year cycles.

» Each of the 12 years is represented by an animal.

These are (in chronological order): Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and
Boar (Pig).

» The Chinese believe the animal designated to a year is key to understanding the “personality” or “characteristics” of that year.

» Because it follows a lunar rather than a solar cycle, the Chinese New Year does not fall on the same day every year, but falls around the beginning of February each year.

This year, the Chinese New Year took place earlier on January 23.

» Just as Christmas is a time for families to reunite, the Chinese New Year is sacrosanct for Chinese families.

As the main commercial centres in China are on the coast, most workers return to their inland hometowns for New Year, making this the largest yearly human migration on our planet
